Welcome to another week in “The ‘Inner Circle’ of Leadership Excellence” series. 🤩

Reminding that I'm taking inspiration from some of the commentaries by John Maxwell on his Leadership Bible, the 21 indispensable qualities of a leader.

Competence is our next indispensable quality of an excellent and effective leader, sustaining the trust and respect necessary to lead others towards a shared vision. In examining biblical narratives, we uncover profound insights into the essence of competence and its role in shaping exceptional leaders. Let's explore the stories of Luke 14 and the exemplary leadership of Joshua to collect invaluable lessons on competence.

As I said we would do every week, let's quickly take a look atrecap of the 21 indispensable qualities of a leader.

Luke 14:28-32: The Cost of Competence

Jesus's teachings in Luke 14 underscore the indispensable nature of competence in the journey of discipleship. Competence is not merely a desirable trait; it is essential for navigating the challenges and responsibilities of leadership with wisdom and efficacy.
In the parables recounted by Jesus, we witness the consequences of incompetence. Both the builder and the king falter due to their lack of commitment, resources, and intelligence. Their failures serve as cautionary tales, emphasizing the imperative of competence in leadership.

The Components of Competence

Jesus delineates three crucial components of competence:
1. Commitment: True competence stems from unwavering dedication to the task at hand, surpassing external perceptions and obstacles.
2. Resources: Competence compels a thorough assessment of available resources, leveraging one's gifts, talents, and abilities to achieve excellence.
3. Intelligence: A discerning leader possesses the insight to discern the right course of action, seeking counsel from the Holy Spirit and exercising sound judgment.

Combining these elements engenders not only competence but excellence, inspiring others to follow with confidence and conviction.

Joshua: A Paragon of Competence

The life of Joshua exemplifies the transformative power of competence and the profound impact of steadfast leadership. From his early days as a warrior to his pivotal role in leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, Joshua's journey epitomizes competence in action.

1. Warrior: Joshua's military prowess and leadership acumen were evident from the outset, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
2. Spokesman: As a bearer of divine prophecy, Joshua's role expanded beyond the battlefield, embodying the transformative power of God's word in action.
3. Servant: Joshua's humility and servitude earned him the title "servant of Moses," exemplifying the importance of humility in leadership development.
4. Faithful Co-worker: Even in the shadows of greatness, Joshua remained steadfast and faithful, embodying the virtues of dedication and perseverance.
5. Apprentice: Joshua's tenure under Moses's guidance polished his leadership skills, illustrating the value of mentorship and continuous learning in leadership development.
6. Zealot: Joshua's fervent zeal for God's purposes fueled his passion for leadership, transforming his fervor into a catalyst for positive change.
7. Transformed Leader: Renamed and redefined by God, Joshua emerged as a transformed leader, equipped with the competence and confidence to lead the nation of Israel into its destiny.

Embracing Your Identity

In the journey of leadership, embracing one's God-given identity is paramount to cultivating competence and confidence. Just as Joshua's identity was transformed by God's revelation, so too can we discover our true calling and competence as leaders.
As you reflect on your own journey, consider the name that God calls you today. Whether it be kind, organized, disciplined, or competent, embrace your identity and allow it to shape your leadership journey. For in the revelation of your true identity lies the key to unlocking your full potential as a confident and competent leader, ready to fulfill the mission entrusted to you by God.

In Closing...

In our journey of leadership, we can see the indispensable role of competence. From the stories of Adam's misstep to Joshua's exemplary leadership, we gather invaluable lessons in the pursuit of leadership excellence. Competence isn't merely a skill set; it's a culmination of commitment, resourcefulness, and intelligence guided by divine wisdom. As leaders, let us heed these timeless truths, embracing the call to lead. Through continuous growth and reliance on God's guidance, we can navigate the complexities of leadership, leaving a lasting impact on those we serve.

Leadership Action Time...

This week, I would like to encourage you to practice encouraging communication.

Everyday, find something encouraging to say to a peer, an upper level or an employee. If none of those apply, no problem! It could be a spouse, a child or a friend.

What matters is that you are practicing meaningful encouraging communication!

Have fun!
