In our journey of leadership, another indispensable quality is discernment. It's the keen eye that pierces through the veils of complexity, the steady hand that navigates through uncertainty, and the wisdom that guides decisions with clarity and insight. Let's embark on a journey through the archives of history and scripture, exploring the essence of discernment and its profound impact on leadership.

Reminding that I'm taking inspiration from some of the commentaries by John Maxwell on his Leadership Bible, the 21 indispensable qualities of a leader.

As I said we would do every week, let's quickly take a look atrecap of the 21 indispensable qualities of a leader.

21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader:

Balaam's Blindness: A Lesson in Discernment

In the ancient texts of Numbers, we encounter the enigmatic figure of Balaam, a prophet whose lack of discernment bordered on the comical. Despite his supposed spiritual aptitude, Balaam remained oblivious to the divine presence until a humble donkey opened his eyes to the imminent danger. His story serves as a warning, reminding us that without discernment, even the most gifted can stumble in darkness.

Balaam's foolishness highlights several critical observations:

• Disobedience Breeds Blindness: Balaam's disregard for what he knew to be right led him astray, blinding him to the presence of the divine.
• Divine Intervention: It took a miraculous intervention for Balaam to perceive the truth, underscoring the importance of spiritual awakening in discernment.
• Ego Clouds Perception: Balaam's self-centered agenda clouded his judgment, preventing him from recognizing the danger that lay ahead.

His tale resonates with contemporary leaders, urging us to cultivate a deeper sense of discernment amidst the outcry of our ambitions and desires.

Nathan's Insight: Discernment in Action

Contrast Balaam's tale with the narrative of Nathan, a prophet renowned for his piercing discernment. In the court of King David, Nathan fearlessly confronted the monarch, unraveling the intricate web of sin with unwavering clarity and insight. His actions showcase the transformative power of discernment when wielded with humility and wisdom.

Nathan's discernment stemmed from several key attributes:

• Attunement to God's Voice: Nathan's discernment was grounded in his intimate communion with the divine, enabling him to perceive the truth amidst the cacophony of worldly distractions.

 • Objective Observation: Nathan approached David's situation with impartiality, seeing beyond the facade of power to the heart of the matter.

• Root Cause Analysis: Rather than addressing symptoms, Nathan researched into the underlying issues, offering profound insights that cut to the core of the problem.

His example serves as a inspiration for leaders navigating complex situations, illuminating the path towards righteous action and accountability.

Cultivating Discernment: A Call to Action

As leaders, it's vital to cultivate discernment, a quality echoed throughout history. It urges us to rise above the ordinary and grasp deeper truths. So, how do we nurture this important skill within ourselves?

• Seek Divine Guidance: Like Nathan, immerse yourself in spiritual practice, cultivating a receptive heart attuned to the whispers of the Holy Spirit.

• Develop Analytical Skills: Sharpen your analytical proficiency, honing the ability to dissect complex issues and discern underlying patterns.

• Embrace Intuition: Trust your gut instincts, for oftentimes, intuition serves as a silent guide, offering insights beyond the realm of rationality.

• Learn from Experience: Draw wisdom from experience, reflecting on past successes and failures to refine your discernment in future events.

• Engage in Dialogue: Surround yourself with wise counsel, engaging in meaningful dialogue with mentors and peers to gain diverse perspectives.

In Closing...

In closing, within the realm of leadership, discernment stands as a guiding light amid the shadows of doubt, leading us towards truth, righteousness, and growth. Let us therefore embrace the mantle of discerning leadership with courage and humility, recognizing its pivotal role in navigating the complexities of leadership with wisdom and insight.

Leadership Action Time...

How about we practice listening to God's voice this week? Since attunement is key for discernment, this will be a fun exercise for us to practice!

Here is an idea, I learned from a leader pf mine this past week, it was not mine originally, but I loved it so much I am paying it forward!

Grab a few post-it notes, write down the names of a few people you know and work with, fold it in half, and put it all in a box, in a way that you won’t know which one is which. Pick one from the box, and without looking at the name, ask God to tell you some characteristics about that person. Then look at the name and see how well you heard it! Put the name back in the box! Do it again and again!

This one is so much fun! I would love some feedback!
